Introducing the American Futharch and its Website

Want to write exactly like an ancient runemaster? It hasn’t been possible, until now.

I’ve got some things to say about that, so read on if you like, or you can jump ahead and see the website at https://americanfutharch.com if you prefer. But also read on nonetheless for the what, why, and how.

Ever try writing modern English with runes? Clunky, isn’t it? And that’s regardless of whether you’re using the Elder Futhark or the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc. Inevitably, most such writing attempts inevitably cheat at some point by treating the runes as an alphabet, doing a “what rune can stand for such-and-such letter” kind of approach.

That’s not how the first ancient runemasters wrote in runes. Around the start of the Common Era (or somewhat before), writing in runes meant the Proto-Germanic language with Elder Futhark runes. And these three steps:

  1. Select the word to write.
  2. Identify the individual sounds that make up the word.
  3. Carve in order the individual runes that correspond directly to those individual sounds.

The emphasis is on sound. There’s no letters involved. They had to use their ears. After all, they had no dictionaries. And they did this in their native language, not a dead language they learned from a book. (They didn’t have books either.) They just had the Elder Futhark, precisely tuned to their language, to represent all possible sounds, quite simply and directly. Perfect harmony between the sounds of their living language and the staves they carved.

So how can you write exactly like an ancient runemaster and enjoy the same living-language link they had in their runic writing? You just need three things:

  1. A good grasp of the actual sounds of your native language.
  2. The above three-step process.
  3. Runes designed for your native language.

The first two pieces have always been there for those who study the runes enough. But we never got all the way, because we’ve always been missing that crucial third piece. It simply hasn’t existed in the modern world, for any language. Until now.

Yes, for the first time ever, piece #3 now exists for American English. I’ve been working on it for over a year now, and it’s public launch is here.

Meet the revolutionary new American Futharch runes, designed to fit the sounds of American English—runes that speak your language. And with, you can put together all three pieces and write your American English exactly like an ancient runemaster—for the first time in centuries!

The American Futharch doesn’t come out of a vacuum. I made it by reforming the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, which in turn was a reform of the Elder Futhark. So you’ll see lots of familiar rune names, only this time, they’re in modern English. It’s a complete rune row: sounds, names, staves, aett structure, and so forth.

But that’s not all. These are runes for magic, divination, esotercism, poetry, and more—runes with which to Do All The Things. And I’m doing all those things already.

This is just the beginning. There’s much more to come.

Would you know more, or what?
